If you’re needing something new to watch

Maybe this will be helpful because you’re bored, or maybe it won’t be at all because you’ve reached the level beyond bored AKA SUPER BORED where nothing is interesting?

TV Shows // recommended by friends

Money Heist // Mark

Where to find it: Netflix

Number of seasons: 4 seasons (5th season not confirmed yet I think, but it seems clear there will be one) with about 10 episodes each

Episode length: 45 minutes

Description: A genius mastermind leads a group of thieves in infilitrating the bank of Spain, and a story of intertwining love, betrayal, and survival begins. A combination of Now You See Me and Oceans 11. You would like Money Heist if you like fast-paced action.

Note from Annie: If the masks are freaking you out, I was also very creeped out by the masks until I learned they were Salvador Dali masks. Hope that helps.

All American // Jocelyn

Where to find it: Netflix, The CW–don’t know what that is (and can purchase on other places like Amazon Prime and Youtube)

Number of seasons: 2 season (3 supposed to come out later this year) with 16 episodes each

Episode length: 42 minutes

Note: Literally EVERY SINGLE EPISODE is 42 minutes. Dang, I’ve never seen that before. I wonder if there’s something special about the number 16 and 42??

Description: It is about a boy who lives in a neighborhood that is relatively poor and full of gangs, but he is really good at football so the coach for a really rich school comes and recruits him to play of them. The show is really good because the drama is not just petty high school drama, but like real life drama. The first few episodes are petty drama, but pull through and it gets wayyyyy better. It shows that no matter where you come from, rich or poor, everybody has problems of their own.

Note: She’s obsessed with this show.

Brooklyn 99 // Jael

Where to find it: Hulu, NBC, Youtube TV, SlingTV, fubo TV, and apparently this website where you illegally stream it for free (and can purchase on several other places too like Amazon Prime and Youtube)

Number of seasons: 7 seasons (still on-going) with about 22 episodes each

Episode length: 20 minutes

Description: A comedy show about a police precinct that solves cases. A combination of The Office and Chicago PD. Really good show and the characters are very funny. (there are 2 police officers that are really dumb and don’t do anything but they are soooo funny)

HigaTV // channel

I’m not sure where to start with my description on this one. If you’ve ever heard of Ryan Higa or nigahiga, this is his second channel. It’s just a bunch of friends playing random/normal games and being goofy. This is the only channel I watch every video of because every single one of them makes me laugh.

When I tell my friends how amazing these videos are, they usually say something along the lines of, oh I haven’t watched Ryan Higa in forever. They just don’t find these videos as funny as I do, but I think they’re SO FUNNY. My favorite Youtube channel, hands down. I’ve mostly figured out the posting schedule (MWFSun around 2:00) so now the videos are literally part of my Social Distancing Schedule.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries // video series

For a few years I had been hearing about this entity named “the Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” but I had no idea what exactly it was. I think I assumed it was more of an inside reference than an actual thing. Then I learned that it was actually a Youtube series created by Hank Green (of vlogbrothers, crash course, brother to John Green) and Bernie Su.

It’s a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice told through 100 short vlogs made by Lizzie. I watched the whole series two Thanksgiving breaks ago. Each vlog is only around three to five minutes, and I couldn’t stop clicking the next one. So be warned. It’s so annoying that even though you know what’s going to happen, you still get sucked into the blackhole of Darcy-tension.

And Darcy-tension is a real thing! Last year I listened to Pride and Prejudice on audio narrated by Rosamund Pike, and I literally got slight shivers listening to Darcy Talk. Okay, small aside about the audiobook version: it was also so good. Did you know some audiobook narrators do different voices for all the characters?? I was skeptical of audiobooks beforehand, but Rosamund Pike converted me. I was able to download it for free on Apple iBooks, but I’m not sure if that’s still a thing.

bestdressed // channel

This one is the left field recommendation. I’m subscribed to a few other beauty/fashion/lifestyle channels (what is the name for that genre??), but I almost never watch them. If I do, I don’t even get halfway through. I get bored! Then I clicked on one of Ashley’s videos and watched the whole thing. It’s something about the combination of what she says + her voice + the handlettering + the editing + the color scheme. I don’t know, it’s just so good.

BTS Carpool Karaoke // video

If you wanted to, you could categorize my friends into two categories: people who like k-pop, people who dislike k-pop. There’s not really a neutral category. So that’s why when more than one person from the second category told me to watch this video, I knew the recommendation was trustworthy.

Oh wait, I should probably clarify some things: the “k” in k-pop stands for Korean. K-pop is Korean pop music. BTS is k-pop’s most famous and popular group, like in a hyper-extreme way.

What does BTS stand for, you wonder? Good question. I just looked that up because I know I’ve asked someone before, but I forgot. I’s an acronym for the Korean phrase “Bangtan Sonyeondan,” which means Bulletproof Boy Scouts. Ohhh yea, I remember being told this and being like what??? It also says that in 2017, they added the meaning Beyond the Scene too?

Okay, back to the video. My friends were right, they were so funny. It’s like watching a bunch of best friends just goofing around and making each other die laughing. And if you so choose to fall down a rabbit hole of funny BTS videos, you woul dbe able to fall for quite a long time.

Self-Quarantined for the Holidays // video

If I did another compilation of some favorite short documentaries, this would definitely be on it. Watch it for the mom. That’s it.

Have you watched any of these before?
Do you have any recommendations?
What’s something that reliably makes you laugh?

  1. Haha, I already started laughing with the first sentence of this post, because it’s so true that beyond bored is a whole new level. It’s the level of being in your house, with all your books and your phone and food and everything else, but somehow feeling as if there is absolutely nothing to do and there never will be. I’ve yet to experience that in quarantine, thanks to school and zoom classes and the fact that I haven’t gotten tired of reading or watching tiktok yet, but I’m sure it’s coming once school is over.
I want to watch All American! It looks really good. I also want to watch Brooklyn 99. Hmm, show recommendations: well, I think I already recommended New Girl. I also would recommend the first season of Riverdale- any season after that, not so great, but the first season is pretty amazing. Gilmore Girls is one of my all time favorite shows and I started rewatching it and it’s so good. It’s more of a mellow drama, with cozier vibes and family relationships and everything. For a show filled with so much soap opera drama, I’d recommend Jane the Virgin. (Warning: it will make you sob at some parts.)
I cannot say I really knew what the Lizzie Bennett Diaries were until this second?? BUT OKAY, I’M GOING TO WATCH THEM. Because I love Pride & Prejudice and I can tell this is going to be something I will binge. Haha, even though I know the ending, I’m most definitely going to be stressed about what happens, I can already tell.
Hmm, I don’t know what the name for beauty/lifestyle channels is?? I’ll check out the one you recommended. My favorite youtuber is Kristin Johns, and she falls into that category. :)) I also love watching family vlog channels, my favorites being kkandbabyj (they have three little kids) and This Gathered Nest (this Christian family that has like eight kids, all of which are adorable).
It’s funny you mentioned the Carpool Karaoke, because before all of this happened and we were still at school and our normal lives, one of my friends was telling us how she has never listened to BTS or anything but she watched the carpool karaoke they did and thought it was so entertaining and funny, so I’ll have to watch it!
Thank you for all the recommendations! I really loved reading this post, hope you’re doing well. :))

    1. From the first line?? Wow, I didn’t even know that was something I wanted to do until right now. OH MY yes, exactly. Ryan Higa who I mentioned in the post actually made a main channel video recently about this very thing–being surrounded by things to do but still feeling like there’s nothing. I haven’t gotten tired of reading either (ugh don’t want to jinx it), which is superb. If that happens, yikes. About the end of school–I just found out that my school is ending a week earlier than planned on May 22. What about you? Oh, do you think it would be possible to do a buddy read??
Hahah, if you try All American, please tell me so I can tell my friend. I think she will be quite happy. Ohh yes, I was slightly kept up on Riverdale freshman year because this one guy in my art class was obsessed with it. I did hear about how it was had terrible plot and writing but it was somehow good too. Thank you for the recommendations! Is Jane the Virgin on Netflix? Haha, I am so good with crying at a TV show.
AHHH I KNOW. I am so glad you had the same reaction as me to finding out what they actually were. The tension in some episodes is so insanely strong.
Ooh, I haven’t heard of any of these Youtubers. Wow, all of them seem so sweet just from scrolling through their video thumbnails.
Baha, no way! There’s a few lines in it that I think might become recurring lines my friends and I repeat at random times.
Thank you for your comment, Olivia! Oh my goodness, it made me happy to read your thoughts. I hope you’re doing well too :))

      1. Here’s to hoping neither of us get tired of reading! I haven’t been reading the past few days, but I think that’s due to the fact that I’m slightly bored with my current read, but I don’t want to give up on it, so instead I’m just ignoring it. XD That’s so cool your school is ending earlier! Mine isn’t, unfortunately. Which is crazy because I think our grades stop counting on May 11, and my last AP test is the 22, so it’s going to be a pointless week.
I will! Haha, you’re right about Riverdale. I think the plot of the first season is pretty good, but after that it goes downhill and the writing is wack. But somehow, I am still invested?? Yes, Jane the Virgin is on Netflix!
        Haha, that’s the best!
        Thank you!!

        1. Ahaha, did you end up finishing it, or did you decide to read somethign new? Ugh yea, that doesn’t make much sense. Have your teachers mentioned anything about after AP tests yet?
Hahah hey, just because a book or show is arguably bad, that does not it is not just as interesting.

          1. I finished it, yay! I was reading The Astonishing Color of After and I got bored midway through but the ending actually came through, so that’s good.
My teachers still haven’t said what’s happening after tests?? I think they’re just going to assign items on Canvas, but not require it to be turned in.
That’s SO TRUE. Exactly how I feel about Riverdale, and the Selection series, now that I think about it.

            1. Ahh, that’s good! Hopefully Heretics Anonymous does not do that :))
Ohh okay-does that mean basically that this is your last week with homework??
Ahaha, yes! Wait, I think I saw somewhere that the Selection is getting adapted? That might be very wrong, but I feel like I saw something like that.

              1. It didn’t!! :))
Yes! Well, actually I haven’t had any work this week which is nice. It’s essentially summer except for the AP tests, yay!
Yes it is! I think it’s either getting a Netflix show or a Netflix movie, and either way I’m oddly hyped about it.

                1. Wait, I did not know it was going to be with Netflix. Hm, that actually makes me think it’ll be pretty good. Aha, oddly hyped. I can kind of see it catching fire in the same way To All the Boys did.

        1. Update on the buddy read: Heretics Anonymous and A Quiet Kind of Thunder came in for me at the library! It was great, because there weren’t any holds on them and weren’t checked out either I think.
