Maybe this will be helpful because you’re bored, or maybe it won’t be at all because you’ve reached the level beyond bored AKA SUPER BORED where nothing is interesting?
TV Shows // recommended by friends
Money Heist // Mark
Where to find it: Netflix
Number of seasons: 4 seasons (5th season not confirmed yet I think, but it seems clear there will be one) with about 10 episodes each
Episode length: 45 minutes
Description: A genius mastermind leads a group of thieves in infilitrating the bank of Spain, and a story of intertwining love, betrayal, and survival begins. A combination of Now You See Me and Oceans 11. You would like Money Heist if you like fast-paced action.
Note from Annie: If the masks are freaking you out, I was also very creeped out by the masks until I learned they were Salvador Dali masks. Hope that helps.
All American // Jocelyn
Where to find it: Netflix, The CW–don’t know what that is (and can purchase on other places like Amazon Prime and Youtube)
Number of seasons: 2 season (3 supposed to come out later this year) with 16 episodes each
Episode length: 42 minutes
Note: Literally EVERY SINGLE EPISODE is 42 minutes. Dang, I’ve never seen that before. I wonder if there’s something special about the number 16 and 42??
Description: It is about a boy who lives in a neighborhood that is relatively poor and full of gangs, but he is really good at football so the coach for a really rich school comes and recruits him to play of them. The show is really good because the drama is not just petty high school drama, but like real life drama. The first few episodes are petty drama, but pull through and it gets wayyyyy better. It shows that no matter where you come from, rich or poor, everybody has problems of their own.
Note: She’s obsessed with this show.
Brooklyn 99 // Jael
Where to find it: Hulu, NBC, Youtube TV, SlingTV, fubo TV, and apparently this website where you illegally stream it for free (and can purchase on several other places too like Amazon Prime and Youtube)
Number of seasons: 7 seasons (still on-going) with about 22 episodes each
Episode length: 20 minutes
Description: A comedy show about a police precinct that solves cases. A combination of The Office and Chicago PD. Really good show and the characters are very funny. (there are 2 police officers that are really dumb and don’t do anything but they are soooo funny)
HigaTV // channel
I’m not sure where to start with my description on this one. If you’ve ever heard of Ryan Higa or nigahiga, this is his second channel. It’s just a bunch of friends playing random/normal games and being goofy. This is the only channel I watch every video of because every single one of them makes me laugh.
When I tell my friends how amazing these videos are, they usually say something along the lines of, oh I haven’t watched Ryan Higa in forever. They just don’t find these videos as funny as I do, but I think they’re SO FUNNY. My favorite Youtube channel, hands down. I’ve mostly figured out the posting schedule (MWFSun around 2:00) so now the videos are literally part of my Social Distancing Schedule.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries // video series
For a few years I had been hearing about this entity named “the Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” but I had no idea what exactly it was. I think I assumed it was more of an inside reference than an actual thing. Then I learned that it was actually a Youtube series created by Hank Green (of vlogbrothers, crash course, brother to John Green) and Bernie Su.
It’s a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice told through 100 short vlogs made by Lizzie. I watched the whole series two Thanksgiving breaks ago. Each vlog is only around three to five minutes, and I couldn’t stop clicking the next one. So be warned. It’s so annoying that even though you know what’s going to happen, you still get sucked into the blackhole of Darcy-tension.
And Darcy-tension is a real thing! Last year I listened to Pride and Prejudice on audio narrated by Rosamund Pike, and I literally got slight shivers listening to Darcy Talk. Okay, small aside about the audiobook version: it was also so good. Did you know some audiobook narrators do different voices for all the characters?? I was skeptical of audiobooks beforehand, but Rosamund Pike converted me. I was able to download it for free on Apple iBooks, but I’m not sure if that’s still a thing.
bestdressed // channel
This one is the left field recommendation. I’m subscribed to a few other beauty/fashion/lifestyle channels (what is the name for that genre??), but I almost never watch them. If I do, I don’t even get halfway through. I get bored! Then I clicked on one of Ashley’s videos and watched the whole thing. It’s something about the combination of what she says + her voice + the handlettering + the editing + the color scheme. I don’t know, it’s just so good.
BTS Carpool Karaoke // video
If you wanted to, you could categorize my friends into two categories: people who like k-pop, people who dislike k-pop. There’s not really a neutral category. So that’s why when more than one person from the second category told me to watch this video, I knew the recommendation was trustworthy.
Oh wait, I should probably clarify some things: the “k” in k-pop stands for Korean. K-pop is Korean pop music. BTS is k-pop’s most famous and popular group, like in a hyper-extreme way.
What does BTS stand for, you wonder? Good question. I just looked that up because I know I’ve asked someone before, but I forgot. I’s an acronym for the Korean phrase “Bangtan Sonyeondan,” which means Bulletproof Boy Scouts. Ohhh yea, I remember being told this and being like what??? It also says that in 2017, they added the meaning Beyond the Scene too?
Okay, back to the video. My friends were right, they were so funny. It’s like watching a bunch of best friends just goofing around and making each other die laughing. And if you so choose to fall down a rabbit hole of funny BTS videos, you woul dbe able to fall for quite a long time.
Self-Quarantined for the Holidays // video
If I did another compilation of some favorite short documentaries, this would definitely be on it. Watch it for the mom. That’s it.
Have you watched any of these before?
Do you have any recommendations?
What’s something that reliably makes you laugh?
